How to repair some columns in which the carbonation and chloride starts the reinforcement corrosion

Abstract

This paper explains how to repair some columns of several buildings existing in La Coruña. The work contains how reinforcement corrosion can crack concrete and advises on remedial action. Two systems of reinforcement are used. In the weakest columns a metallic hoop is used. The others were repaired using an increased concrete cover tied with shear connectors to the existing columns. The novelity of this method is to employ mortars with high resistance, up to 20000 psi. It allows to bind the shear connectors to the old concrete with small lengths.
