Abstract

This article presents the major features and the criteria as used in the project for two viaducts located on the island of Cyprus, which were structurally designed taking into account the area?s seismic nature. The viaducts are very different as regards their type of structure, the construction system used and in various fundamental characteristics such as the overall length and the height of the piers. However, their earthquake resistant conception followed the same principles based on the seismic isolation, damping and the elastic capacity of the structure to regain its initial position after an earthquake. Paraseismic elements with an energy dissipation capability were used in both cases.
