External prestressing in concrete bridges: two points of view of the same technique

Abstract


In the last decade external prestressing has became, worldwide, an extended technique for the construction of concrete bridges. The return of external prestressing has been simultaneous in Europe and in North America, but the reasons and the later development have been differents. This article describes this technique from both points of view, detailng the objetives, design criteria, technology and evolution.
