Abstract

Glassfibre Reinforced Cements (GRC) are materials being increasingly used in construction due to its good mechanical properties, lightness as well as shock and fire resistance. Alkali attack to glass fibre produces a long term loss of mechanica lproperties. This problem is nowadays less important due to the utilization of alkali resistant fibres and additives to the cement matrix that reduce its aggresiveness. The use of GRC permanent formwork for reinforced and prestressed concrete structures is being widely devolped in many countries and yet only slightly in Spain. This paper presents the advantages of GRC permanent formwork, especially to reduce cracking and carbonation of concrete, leading to a better corrosion resistance of concrete structures. Also, some probles that could arise by using GRC permanent formwork are pointed out.
