Corrosion of reinforcement and service life of concrete structures

Abstract

Corrosion of reinforcement affects the performance of concrete structures under the Ultimate and Serviceability Limit States. Some proposals are presented on the reduction of reinforcing bar section, the cracking at the concrete surface and the bond deterioration between steel and concrete. Beside, some practical considerations are summarized to predict the ultimate actions effect and the serviceability conditions in concrete elements with corroding reinforcement.
