Abstract

As a result of the city expansion, the Cerda Square of Barcelona has suffered a deep transformation, from an old road interchange, into a new urban center. The works have involved the execution of 6721 m2 of structures in an urban setting, with all the difficulties associated to it. In this paper, two of the most important actions carried out in the square from the structural viewpoint are described. The first one is the demolition of two continuous post-tensioned concrete bridges of 162 and 106 m total length, with maximum spans of 25 and 36 m. The second one is the construction of a pedestrian over crossing of 192,6 m length and 4,6 m minimum width, consisting of two composite concrete and steel box girder bridges of 40 m maximum length, monolithically connected to a composite cantilever. Key words: Demolition, Prestressed Concrete, Pedestrian bridges, composite construction, bridges
