Abstract


The article proposes a historical and personal review of the evolution of the composite structures in Spain seen by the author, who was one of the initiators of this discipline in Spain.
The beginnings of the discipline are reviewed, the main bibliographical references, the author's fundamental works and those innovations that have been carried out to improve the structural behavior or the constructive processes.

Alvaro Serrano Corral, MC2 Engineering Consultant Office, S.L.

Álvaro Serrano is Director of MC2 Estudio de Ingeniería, part of the Typsa Group. He joined in 2002 after obtaining his Civil & Structural Engineering degree in the Technical University of Madrid with honours. In MC2, he develops all manner of structural projects and construction procedures for both civil works (Widening of the Bridge over the Rande Strait, the Nalón Viaduct in the A-8 highway) and building structures (Espacio Tower, PwC Tower). He received a special mention of the 2017 AAYE Award from fib in the category of Design and Construction. Alvaro also collaborates, as Adjunct Professor, with the Technical University of Madrid.

Julio Martínez Calzón, MC2 Engineering Consultant Office, S.L.

Julio Martínez Calzón es una de las figuras españolas más importantes en el mundo de la ingeniería estructural de la época reciente.  

A través de sus más de 50 años de carrera profesional ha contribuido significativamente al desarrollo de la ingeniería Civil en el campo de las Estructuras, tanto en los ámbitos profesional y docente, como en el académico; siendo reconocido como el introductor y máximo exponente del desarrollo de las estructuras mixtas hormigón-acero en España.

 Julio Martínez Calzón es un ingeniero humanista de singular creatividad técnica y estética con una vocación constantemente innovadora que se refleja en múltiples obras, que han supuesto novedades mundiales en el uso de los materiales aplicados a la construcción de puentes.

 En el campo de la edificación, Julio Martínez Calzón, ha colaborado y ha hecho realidad los diseños de los más prestigiosos arquitectos tanto españoles como extranjeros. Fruto de esta colaboraciones son emblemáticos edificios como la Torre de Collserola (Norman Foster), el Palau Sant Jordi (Arata Isozaki), la Sede de Gas Natural y el Pabellón de España en la Expo de Shanghái 2010 (Miralles – Tagliabue), el Teatro del Canal (Juan Navarro Baldeweg), el pabellón Madrid Arena (Cano Lasso) o Torre Espacio (Pei, Cobb, Freed & Partners).

 Auto-declarado como ingeniero humanista en la mejor tradición renacentista, los trabajos de Julio Martínez Calzón en este campo alcanzan los más diversos ámbitos, desde la Filosofía a las Artes, destacando su obra recientemente publicada sobre pintura del siglo XIX.
