Abstract

Eurocode 7 has ushered in a substantial change in the traditional approach to foundation design in Europe, from calculation methods based on allowable stress to others based on limit states and the use of partial factors in geotechnical engineering. These new premises bring the criteria for geotechnical design into line with the criteria established in other Eurocodes for calculating the rest of the structure. The article provides a detailed description of the various ultimate and service limit states established in Eurocode 7 for application to foundation design. It also explains how the partial factors affecting actions, soil materials and strength values are to be used in each case.
